Home of the Commander-in-Chief Guards
Our Color Guard is based upon the famed light infantry unit that protected General Washington during the American Revolutionary War. Officially known as the Commander-in-Chief Guards, they were more often called Washington's Life Guards. They fought in every battle at which Washington was personally in command. Today, the S.A.R.'s national color guard program works much the same way as militia units did during the American War for Independence. There were militia units comprised of civilians spread out in all the towns and local communities, ready to be called to action. Today, the SAR relies on the Color Guard units of its local Chapters to act on behalf of the State and National Societies.
